4-1-2020 COVID-19 Update

Throughout the pandemic, Deutsches Altenheim has been in communication with, and following guidelines from, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) to implement precautionary measures to the best of our ability. Since March 20, staff have been closely monitoring all German Centre and Edelweiss Village residents and patients for COVID-19 symptoms (cough, fever, shortness of breath) every day. Under the guidance of our medical director, Dr. David Chen, we have been testing any individual who exhibits even minor symptoms of the virus. When a COVID-19 test is administered, the individual is immediately placed on precautions—anyone interacting with the individual must wear a protective gown, mask, and gloves.

This past week, Deutsches Altenheim received confirmation that two German Centre patients had tested positive for COVID-19. Both patients and family members were immediately informed of the positive test result. Staff who had interacted with the individuals were also notified. The patients have been placed in isolation, with movement outside the room prohibited, pending follow-up testing. Dedicated teams have been assigned to care for the patients, to reduce the risk of spread to other patients and staff.

We will continue to follow public health guidelines. As staff enter the building, their wellness is assessed and they are given a mask, which is to be worn at all times while in the building. We are in contact with families of all residents/patients to keep them apprised of developments on the campus. Additionally, for up-to-date notices about any changes related to the virus that affect our campus or our policies and procedures, please refer to our website at www.germancentre.org/covid-19-updates.

Be well and stay healthy.

Sincerely,

Michael B. Lincoln
Chief Executive Officer
