At Deutsches Altenheim, our top priority is the safety and well-being of residents and staff. Despite our best efforts, COVID-19 has affected residents and staff across our campus. Throughout the pandemic, we have been in contact with, and followed guidance from, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Below is the the current impact of COVID-19 as of May 27, 2020:
German Centre (skilled nursing)
1 confirmed case of COVID-19 among our residents
5 employees are on medical leave after testing positive for COVID-19
Edelweiss Village (assisted living)
0 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among our residents
1 employee on medical leave after testing positive for COVID-19
According to the CDC, a patient can be considered recovered if they’ve had at least three days with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, their respiratory symptoms are improving, and at least 14 days have passed since their symptoms began.
The availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) has been an ongoing issue on our campus – as it has been in many other facilities. We were fortunate to receive donations of PPE from several individuals, as well as organizations large and small. We are truly grateful for this outpouring of support. PPE supply and usage are monitored daily and our procurement team continues its relentless search for additional resources to keep our inventory stable. Our current supply of PPE, including facemasks, gowns, gloves and eye protection, is sufficient to meet our needs for two weeks with stringent conservation efforts.
Testing will continue, as needed, for residents across our campus. Approximately 90% of staff who have worked throughout the pandemic have been tested.
Since the first positive test result in late March, there have been 20 deaths among test-positive residents and patients at German Centre. We extend our deepest sympathy to their families and friends. While there is no substitute for family, residents are nurtured by a staff that are caring and compassionate. Every senior in our care knows they are loved.
