FAQs

Are the staff members specially trained in Alzheimer’s/memory care?

In addition to specialized training prior to working on the Schrafft Pavilion, Geriatric Psychiatrist, Dr. Bruce Kaster, meets monthly with staff to review behavior management techniques and other non-pharmacological interventions. Additionally, all staff (Licensed Nurses, CNTs and Resident Life) receive quarterly education from the Schrafft Pavilion Program Director.

What resident life activities are provided for residents with Alzheimer’s/Dementia?

A full-time board certified Music Therapist offers group and 1:1 therapy sessions, a sun-downing music therapy group, and regular art and music therapy groups. A volunteer pet therapist visits once a week. The Rosengarten, our secure outdoor garden area, offers a walking path, lap garden, and plenty of small seating areas for residents, loved ones, and staff to spend quality time outside. Daily exercise programs including Tai Chi, chair yoga, and walking groups. A monthly couples luncheon and birthday parties are staples of our social and musical community.

Can I take my loved one out of the building for a visit?

We are always happy to have residents enjoy visits with their loved ones in whatever setting they choose. The Deutsches Altenheim campus encompasses several comfortable indoor and outdoor seating areas as well as walking paths. If you plan to visit off the campus, we simply request that staff is notified before leaving.

What are the visiting hours?

Because family and friends are an important part of our residents’ care, we welcome visitors any time. We do however ask that if you are visiting later in the evening or early morning that you are respectful of the other residents.

What support services do you offer to families/loved ones?

A monthly caregiver support group, held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association, is offered the first Tuesday of each month for loved ones of residents and individuals in the surrounding community. Quarterly care plan meetings are held to discuss each resident’s status and to gain feedback from family members. Additionally, members of our staff are available if you need further assistance.
