At Deutsches Altenheim’s German Centre for Extended Care, Schrafft Pavilion Memory Support Neighborhood provides exceptional skilled nursing care for residents living with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. Our compassionate and skilled staff fully understand the difficulty that comes with memory-impaired illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
We work with seniors and their families to promote a high quality of life that focuses upon their ongoing memory needs. For every resident, care teams members include nurses, certified nursing technicians (CNTs), resident life staff, social workers, and dietary staff. Our overall goal is to ensure that each senior maintains an active and involved lifestyle. Catering to seniors of every skill and memory level, we encourage families to seek us out for guidance and support.
Memory Program Utilizes Habilitative Model of Care
The memory care program on Schrafft Pavilion is based on the habilitative model of care, allowing residents to utilize the skills they currently have at the moment, rather than the skills that have been lost. Habilitation addresses one’s current abilities and responds to emotions. We work toward positive psychosocial and behavioral well-being by using our specialized memory care program and environment instead of relying on medications and physical restraints.
Schrafft Pavilion environment and programming enables residents to function at their highest potential by promoting individual choice. We look at residents’ life history and routines, and incorporate these into the program. It’s important to give residents opportunities to continue using those memories that are familiar and comfortable. To this end, we nurture the feelings of belonging and purpose. Schrafft Pavilion residents benefit from the ability to be themselves. They consistently receive guidance, support, and encouragement from our caring staff.
We are radically redefining and re-envisioning what nursing home life is — and how to live with aging, illness, Alzheimer’s, or dementia. Specialty programs include:
Expressive Arts Therapy
We use the creative arts as a form of therapy to return residents to a time and place they feel comfortable. The use of music, movement, and art, whether used collectively or on their own, can reunite residents with parts of their former selves. The process of creation is emphasized rather than the final product. We use storytelling, dance, music, drama, poetry, movement, and visual arts together to foster memories and positive emotions.
Sensory Experiences
The new Schrafft Pavilion Sensory Room reflects our innovative approach to memory care. This unique space provides gentle stimulation of the senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell and movement) in a controlled way. The multi-sensory room is designed to promote control and autonomy, which in turn affects positive changes in mood and behavior, as well as increased attention to surroundings. Our goal is to create a calm and soothing atmosphere.

“Because of this experience, I was able to observe how caring, sincere and dedicated the staff and nursing team are in delivering quality senior care. When it was time for my mother to enter an Alzheimer’s care unit, there was only one choice. After almost three years, we are still impressed with the consistently excellent care that she receives. The activities, physical therapy and medical staff are all professional, positive, and genuinely caring with the patients. Much to my delight and surprise, my mother has actually put on much needed weight and is thriving – a difficult feat for the oldest living member of her family, at age 90. We expect to enjoy even more time with her and view the teams involved as key contributors to this exceptional success. Thank you all, you are simply the best!”
